The internet you know will die

Alright, time to be serious this time. As you are reading this, there is a bill being read over that could end the internet we come to know and love to die pretty much.

Not pretty, right? The bills I speak of are The “Stop Online Piracy Act” (SOPA) and The PROTECT IP Act. Both of them are aimed to shut down any site that are suspected to host anything that is copyrighted. Got a picture of of an album cover, blocked. Uploaded a song on your Tumblr that isn’t yours, blocked. Have a video of yourself singing “The bitch came back” by Theory of a Deadman? B-L-O-C-K-E-D. Everything will be blacklisted and there will be nothing you will be able to do. That is, after it get’s passed.

Like I said, it’s being read over and there is a hearing going on. It’s likely going ot be passed because of the MPAA,The Screen Actors Guild, the American Federation of Musicians and a bunch of others are behind it. On our side are the makers of Firefox, Mozilla and story sharing site READit have changed their logos for support. Google, Facebook, Twitter and a slew of other tech companies have also sent letters expressing worry about this bill. And it’s not just Americans, EVERYONE IS EFFECTED. The bulk of sites on the Internet are hosted in the US meaning that if you are in another country, you won’t be able to get on Facebook.

So, what can you do about this? If you head to this website, you can send a letter to your state reps telling them that voting on this bill to pass means that the Internet will die. Tell them that voting no means that Free Speech is also a must on the World Wide Web.

Do not let this pass. If you want the Internet to stay the way it is AND not be man handled by the Government, take action.
